I don’t know why we would ever question or doubt that God is at work while we are at camp with His children. During our last session of camp, Director Darren received this powerful email from a longtime, loved volunteer. It’s too good not to share (over and over)

“Robert and I are on vacation in Utah. Last night, we were supposed to take a guided horseback ride to watch the sunset. A big thunderstorm came in and cancelled the ride. It was just one more thing added to a rotten day.

We rebooked the next morning and had a different wrangler/guide. His name was Mitch, and he was a nice looking young man. As we started the ride, it camp up that he was part of a family of 12. His adoptive mother had 6 kids and when they left the nest, she adopted 6 more. He and his twin brother and their other 4 siblings were the 6 that were adopted.

We mentioned RFKC, and he had attended all 5 years of camp in either California or Oregon. He had not heard anyone talk about camp in a long time.

As we rode, he turned and asked if we had been counselors and if we had made “those photo albums.” He got a huge smile and said he still had all his photo albums, notes from his counselors, and that he remembered every counselor he had. He said it was the best experience of his life. Mitch talked about learning how to fish from his counselor and the birthday party and the lanyard crafts that he and his brother made. His twin brother actually kept in touch with a girl he met at camp and ultimately married her.

Mitch went on to tell us he served in the Army, married a girl from the Air Force, and they have a 3-year-old little girl. He talked of also wanting to adopt like he was adopted, and then he said he needed to see if there were RFK camps near him that he could volunteer at.

Anyway, I don’t believe those things happen by accident. Visiting with that young man and hearing the impact camp had on him was a better gift from God than any sunset.
